Hey Paul, why didn’t I think of this…?

Well, I did but a few years late. I am a little slow, but I didn’t know–never liked Ginsberg much except he was a marketing genius for the beats. But his American Sentences smack of my horizontal haiku–Haikuschmaiku.

Oh the American sentences thing. I ran into American sentences in prompt site feeding frenzy a few months ago, every bloody where you went a sentence with seventeen fucking syllables as if that makes it literature or takes some skill, i was going around thinking i am comment every fucking one of these copy and paste, so you can fucking count, who cares, that is what inspired my australian loopy none grammatical lazy voweled drawlings tagged australian sentences, that is kinda what i think,

    so, ginsberg sucks?

  3. Paul says:

No no, I am sure his intention was good, and it was a good idea at the time, but really it has built in mediocrity, you know, why have a rule of seventeen sylabbles and no other rule, people say oh you are supposed to capture a unique spirit of the thing too like haiku, but i say why seventeen syllables, it makes no sense, it has no meaning, it is so american in its superficiality, oh we’ll take the ancient japanese artform, turn it into a rule with no reason and call it american sentences, well sure, that makes sense in a perverse way, its very american so maybe just share them amongst yourselves and let the rest of the world get on with writing poetry,

haha…american in its superficiality…HAHA! I heavily agree with Paul here – the prized epitome of senselessness manifested by those sentences, mainly. But I don’t know if Hemingway wrote it with that in mind, but nonetheless I love his shortest short story – “For Sale: Baby Shoes. Never Worn”.

To make the 17 syllables good/ inspire, might take some skill. To count out 17 takes a second grader. There is always an exception to superficial American–when I post mine–I will do it with a link at the top of the page–
    thanks for the comment
